Reality TV housewife filed for bankruptcy

Minnesota reality TV fans might be interested in knowing the latest cast member from Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise to have filed for bankruptcy at some point. As one of several women starring in the show "Real Housewives of Potomac", 36-year-old Robyn Dixon was once married to former NBA player Juan Dixon and is known to have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in September 2013.

According to court documents from her 2013 filing in Maryland, her outstanding personal debts were declared to be in excess of $217,000. The debts included just under $150,000 for her mortgage, approximately $28,000 for her 2011 Volkswagen vehicle, more than $16,500 to American Express, almost $11,000 to Discover Financial and thousands more to various other creditors including Bloomingdale's. The bankruptcy petition also stated that Dixon owed the Internal Revenue Service $2,680 in back income taxes from 2012.

After most of the debts Dixon listed in her bankruptcy filing were discharged in February 2014, Audi Financial Services repossessed her 2011 Volkswagen CC Lux. However, while the case was officially closed in October 2014, the bankruptcy court did not discharge $16,183 in several years worth of unpaid income taxes, which she continued to owe the IRS. In most cases, income taxes are not dischargeable in a bankruptcy proceeding.

As this case shows, individuals from all walks of life frequently seek Chapter 7 bankruptcy relief to handle overwhelming debt and obtain a fresh financial start. There are a variety of eligibility and other requirements associated with that chapter, and a bankruptcy attorney can outline them to a client during a discussion of the debt relief alternatives that may be available.
